What really surprised me were the gangsters I saw. Not young kid type gangbangers like in America but bulky thick necked men in their late 20's to late 40's. Mafia type gangsters.

After I saw these guys driving in black Mercedes Benz SUV's and black Audi A8's I stared paying attention. They arrived in a pack, some obviously bodyguards and armed with glock pistols. Many looked to be steroid using weightlifters complete with tattoos. And of course they were all dressed in black, almost like a uniform.

What surprised me is nobody seemed to notice! I have since learned that it is common knowledge (mafia gangsters dressed in black, driving expensive black cars and carrying guns) with Bulgarian citizens and law enforcement. It seems that these gangsters are politically connected so any real chance of arrest or prosectuion is slim. Such a shame.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25206081.post-3650578726811079862009-01-10T22:00:00.000-08:002009-01-10T22:00:00.000-08:00*sigh* Levski and Botev, should they miraculously ...*sigh* Levski and Botev, should they miraculously appear and use their usual tactics, would be labeled as terrorists.

I don't believe it is possible to get rid of Bulgarian organized crime because of its ties to international organizations of the same type. The Balkans have always been useful as a zone of unrest, in one way or another.

It is sad that it is not possible to fight against the mafia from inside the state at all, because there is no free press and the state is corrupt on all levels. There is only so much you can say before they fling acid in your face or threaten your family.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25206081.post-47969625331627441692008-09-07T12:53:00.000-07:002008-09-07T12:53:00.000-07:00We need to form a party, a partisan party that uni...We need to form a party, a partisan party that unites all of us under the common desire for justice served in Bulgaria. The EU does not understand the burden we carry, our mentality of slaves, our fears, our limitations, the brutality of greed and corruption. Unfortunately, I have no power, I have no influence, no connections, no ways and means, no courage to do that. I am trustworthy, but trust no one. I am loyal, but expect no loyalty from anyone in return. God has given me a sense of justice and a credo that everyone deserves a dignified existence, but I am neither Levski nor Botev.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25206081.post-66199478844843206482008-06-18T02:44:00.000-07:002008-06-18T02:44:00.000-07:00Even the government seems to be involved in the Bu...Even the government seems to be involved in the Bulgarian underworld. It just makes me sick! Isn't there a way out of this? I was even thinking of writing an e-mail to EC, begging them to get involved.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25206081.post-39111727645573183292008-06-07T10:27:00.000-07:002008-06-07T10:27:00.000-07:00I just read online about the death of Georgi Stoev...I just read online about the death of Georgi Stoev. Very sad, indeed. You've written a very interesting post. Thank you for that. I think Bulgaria needs another Botev and Levski to uproot the mafia. Until then, the situation will not change.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
