Why I hate Russia

I hate Russia because too many of its people are clueless and imperial-minded, unable to build a decent country for themselves and ready to sacrifice their lives to prevent others from living well.

I am sorry to say it but Russians are relatively harmless only when they are starving. As soon as Russian economy provides enough for armament and food, in this order, the "democratically" elected Russian rulers begin bullying and killing non-Russians to boost up their domestic rating, because nothing seems to make the average Russian happier and prouder than seeing non-Russians (preferably civilians) killed or oppressed by Russian troops.

In the Soviet era, we had jokes that Russians "think their borders are secure only if they are steadily expanding" and "feel their borders secure only if there are Russian troops at both sides at the border". These jokes are actual again. Five years ago, Russia attacked Georgia, snatched land from it and got away with it. Now, it is attacking Ukraine after Ukrainians rioted against the "democratically elected" Russian puppet president and forced him to resign.

I do not want to go into detail how ethnic Russians in Ukraine behaved as traitors and hailed as heroes the bloody Berkut anti-riot forces who had killed dozens of demonstrators. Now, Russia has occupied Crimea "to defend Russian speakers" and seems prepared to take all of Eastern Ukraine, much like Hitler in 1938 attacked Czechoslovakia to defend the German-speaking minority there. Below, I am pasting from Laura Mills' AP report without further comments.

"MOSCOW (AP) — Thousands marched freely through Moscow on Sunday in support of Russia using military force in neighboring Ukraine, while at an anti-invasion protest nearby dozens were detained...

At least 10,000 people waving Russian flags rallied in central Moscow. Some dressed in Soviet military uniforms and shouted slogans like "Fascism will not pass!" and "No to Nazism!" — evoking parallels with the repulsion of Hitler's troops from Ukraine in World War II.

But at an anti-invasion protest near Red Square, dozens of demonstrators — one of whom held up just a blank piece of poster paper in protest — were quickly detained by police. The Associated Press witnessed more than 50 detentions and spotted at least five police vans, which carry between 15 and 20 protesters, driving away from the square.

Since parliament gave President Vladimir Putin the green light to use military force in Ukraine late on Saturday, the Russian leader has defied calls from the West to pull back his troops, insisting that Russia has a right to protect its interests and those of Russian-speakers in the strategic Black Sea region of Crimea and elsewhere in Ukraine...

Russia Today claimed that 675,000 of Ukraine's population of 46 million had fled across the border to Russia, and showed the governors of Russia's western-most regions gearing up to accept the flood of refugees. State-owned channel Russia One showed what it alleged were cars lining up to flee the border into Russia — but the sign marking the border was actually for Shegini, a town on Ukraine's western border with Poland...

"We are one brotherly nation, we are all Russians in our souls," said Galina Kravchuk, a retiree at the pro-invasion rally who said she had lived in Crimea all her life but was visiting her daughter in Moscow. "Those protesters (in Ukraine) are hired. They are paid by the West and by America."

But among many at the rally, active support seemed paper thin. Many were delivered to the square by buses marked as city government property, and others confessed that they had been forced by their employers to attend.

"The boss forced us to come," said Elena, who wouldn't give her last name for fear of repercussions at her workplace. "Do you really think that all these people came here voluntarily? Never.""

Though I'm Russian myself and live in Russia I have to admit that Russia is a degraded country in all respects and Russians are really a repulsive nation. There were days when I was proud of being Russian - now I'm badly ashamed of it.

Thank you, Mikhael! There is hope for Russia, in people like you!

Well, what can i say? I think CNN and all news in US is the same as in Russia. They do really good propaganda. And i think, you have to come here, to Russia for better understanding that it's really best place in the world.
I believe in Jesus and he loves everyone. In my church i met americans and other people (like koreans or africans). And i understand: all people are cool. Really. And we have many troubles here, and you have many bad things there (in US). But all this is political stuff, for civilians it is empty stuff. I have to work, to pay my bills, to educate my kids. And i have no time for politics. I hope someday you shall understand how many things in your post not true. People that live in Ukraine our brothers, and they are russian. It is very funny, because they are never been ukraines. They are RUSSIANS. And that's all. Thank you for your attention. My name is Anton. I'm from Vladivostok, i am 29 years old. I've got beautiful wife and two kids. Jesus Christ loves you very much.

Why do you think that I am an American? I am blogging here in English, but I am a Bulgarian.

I agree with you that all people are brothers, but only on this. And I think Russians must reconsider their idea of brotherhood, i.e. of themselves being the Big Brother having a God-given right to step on the necks of little brothers.

You say Ukrainians are Russians, yet they are laying down their lives in order to get freedom from Russia. You say I must come to Russia to know better about it. I need not, however. I know all I need to know about Russia, because I have spent all my life in a country brought to ruins by it. This is what Russia does to other countries, and to itself as well.

And even those Ukrainians who are ethnic Russians are now against Russia, if they are young, educated and productive. Russia has support among the elderly, uneducated and non-productive people, those who cannot or don't want to work and live on money taken from someone else. Russia enjoys the support of low-quality people by bribing them. However, no such system can survive in the long turn. So I am optimistic.

I hate russians more than any other people. I would laugh if all countries in the world got together and bombed that country to small pieces, and then shared the country area with each other.

Maya M said...

Anonymous, I do not approve your attitude, but if you are writing from Ukraine or Georgia or Chechnya or another nice place turned into hell by Russia, I could not blame you!

Ukrainians are not Russians, they never were and never will be. Born & bread 30 kms away from Russian border, sharing Russian/Soviet empires legacy, I will never ever call myself Russian.

I hate the Moskovites who, having stolen the very name "Rus", now claim themselves the belly button of the world.

Thank you, Sophie!

I hate Russia most of all! It makes war in every good place, kill people who don't want to do that they want. Russians are living in mud and want everybody living in mud with them.

I was in BULGARIA... Everywhere in Bulgaria stands at 100 meters away... But I do not hate you because of this... Maya, you are a victim of propaganda... Why do you hate America that bombed the peaceful towns in Serbia, and in Iraq killed more than a million civilians ... Easier to hate Russia, it is so convenient ...

Maya M said...

Sergey,
I do not understand what you mean when saying that "everywhere in Bulgaria stands at 100 meters away". Anyway, whatever you mean, and however bad it is, it is in our own country. We haven't invaded other countries for many decades.
Your comment is a wonderful illustration why people from normal societies have a problem communicating with Russians.
If you want Eastern Europeans to take you seriously, NEVER tell them that they dislike Russia because they are victims of propaganda. Because your country ruined their countries. After WWII, in all European countries under Western control, there was prosperity, democracy and rule of law. In all countries under Russian control, there was oppression, poverty and total decline. The perfect example, of course, were the two Germanies.
Moreover, the Eastern European is more than likely to come from a family that has been dispossessed by the Russian puppet rulers and has had members in communist prisons and concentration camps, or even killed. When you tell the survivors that they are victims of propaganda, you are adding insult to injury.
Another advice: do NOT remind any Balkan resident how your country supported the "peaceful" genocidal warmongers in Serbia who kept oppressing and killing people until NATO resorted to bombs to remove them from power.
How are the Serbs now? Applying for EU membership. Do not seem to have more nostalgia for Milosevic than the Germans have for Hitler.
America is the only upholder of civilization. So I understand why you hate it, but why should I hate it? Maybe the 2003 invasion of Iraq wasn't a good idea. However, things are incomparable. And do you know why? Because the USA will not take a square inch of land from Iraq. Russia, on the contrary, thinks only how to grab land from other countries.
People hate land grabbers, Sergey. As long as Russia wages aggressive wars and grabs land, people will hate it. And the blame for it lays on Russia, not on those who hate it.

Let me introduce a little historical course. touched upon by you previously ,here! #Ukraine or Georgia or Chechnya or another nice place turned into hell by Russia"logically conclude that you sure about same script in different times and places?....Chechnya ,it was 90 ies! for Russia was very hard period ,all territory were cover gangs and groups of ppl call BESPREDEL shiki (extreme violence) the huge military potential, no more working fabrics were stuffed -tanks,guns,bombs became the one of the goods which such ppl sale ,so where need such supplement ,where war! this region was main transit corridor ....and all war - it is just bandits disassembly.
Georgia ....i cant say ,i lived this period at Spain....But Ukraine ! I know that this war were discussed at 2006 ! The talks about monopoly gas tax at Sweden , Russia kept deny reviewing new prices for EU ,us further USA said that they start more active work with Ukraine. back then Putin said that if they will appear there -he start to to destabilise this area ! Yes.....I understand that Crim really must belong to Russia , but the war at Donbass!!! I have no explanation ! i 'm not hater! i have first professional historian edu, so when i just started i hated everything and everyone , because i don't had understanding why pll kill each other ! Know i'm cosmopolit ! and believe at KARMa ....And so all things, time will mend!

sometimes i feel like Jew in berlin 1938 ..too many people around me - become a true war propaganda zombies...agressive and totally mad....they hate all world.... exclude zimbabve and north korea (our best friends today - what a shame ) ...
russian TV - is a total facist shit.
they talking about facists in Ukraine ,but true facist - is Putin....
he sold all my country ....and his propaganda machine - transform my citizens -to something evil.... like in nazi germany in hitler times....
i really fear the future....

Maya M said...

Thank you, Artem!
I understand your fears, and think they are reasonable. With everything that Russia is doing now under the leadership of Putin, it instills fear and hate in all its neighbors and many of its own subjects... and at some moment, the pendulum may swing back.
Take care! I am worried for all nice Russians, with the crushing of dissent and the resurrected oppressive laws from the Stalin era!

..take North Korea made by Russia vs South Korea made by the US, China after the WWII under Russia's impact vs free Taiwan, Vietnam under Russia's impact vs free Thailand under American impact, and yes, compare the 2 Germanies after the WWII... all those under Russia had rough times and those free from Russia flourished. No comments, just facts.

I do understand you, I studied in Moscow and was really shocked by how cruel people are in this country with each other, it seems they live just for treating bad each other, saying painful words to show how they succeed in such things..They were calling me "Angel", even though I was explaining to all that I m a normal person, they are anormal..Then I moved to France where polite, kind, unlike russians people are living and forget thanks to god about existence of this nation..Now in my workspace appeared a russian girl, so different, so arrogant, so cruel as if it comes from forest..I wonder why I can't say such things about other nations but only about russians and russians...Maybe really it is time to become human?

It saddens me to no end when people hate modern Russians for the mistakes that Russia had made many years ago. I truly hope that the people here don't actually want to bomb Russia, because you'd be killing millions upon millions of kind and harworking, peace-loving people. How can it be that we keep on saying that "every person is an individual and special and different", yet when talking about nations we revert to stereotypes and "the broader picture". There is no point in writing this message, but I'm just really sad today.

Maya M said...

Anonymous, nobody wants to bomb Russia and kill millions of Russians. We are angry at the Russians because of things Russia is doing now, and they are not trying to make their country peaceful and democratic.
I am still hoping for a better future!

Olesya said...

Have you ever talked to a NORMAL Russian? I am Russian, but was born in the US. My parents are smart, normal people, very polite and appreciate other cultures and different opinions. You judge me and others by politicians and propaganda, forgetting that I am only 14 years old. And one of my favorite writers is Harper Lee. My other favorites are Alexandre Dumas, Jorge Amado, Alexander Sergeevich Puskin and Shakespeare. I love classical music and do not hate anyone because they are a certain nationality. And speaking of Russian history, we were more humane. Example late 1500's. In Russia the number of people excecuted is estimated between 5-7 thousand. In England, about 89 thousand. Unlike Europe, we did not burn anyone at stake for being a different religion. Take Kazan for example. When in 1552, Tzar Ivan IV and the Russians conquered the Kazan Khanate, no one was persecuted for being a Muslim. As a result, about 53-61 years later, during the Time of Troubles, the Tatars fought side by side with the Russians against the Polish invaders. I hope I do not need to remind you about what the fact that the Europeans destroyed the Maya and Inca civilizations in the America's. Are ther rude, disgusting people in Russia? Yes, but those people are in every country. Being merciful to your deafeated enemy is a major value in Russian culture. We can say all the crap we want, but common sense is something that can not be deafeated. Speaking of the Poles, they and the Russians never got along since the 1300's. I believe that irrational hatred and stereotyping happens because of lack of knowledge. In our textbook we jump from 988 to 1240's from there to 1547 and to the early 1700's. Than to 1812 and 1861. That is followed by the Russian Revolution. And the remaining section discusses the horrors of Soviet times. All forgetting that you did not need to pay tuition fees to go to college, unlike US. And other aspects of Russian history. To build an objective view of it all, learn Russian history and talk to Russians. We are not as bad as you think.

Maya M said...

Olesya,
Yes, I have talked to many normal Russians. They are against the policy of their state. They know well that the policy of Russia, and the lack of widespread resistance to this policy, makes other people distrust Russians.

Olesya said...

You don't realize that many people are for it. And also that some are too young to care. About 17 percent of Russia's population is under 16. I will be 16 in December 2018. When you label a country as the enemy, you forget that there are people like me(15 year old girls) or my nephew(6 in May 2018). You don't care that some people like my big sister, who is a biochemist, are working for the good of mankind. My sister is working on finding a cure for Alzeimer's. I know what it is like to be hated for your nationality. At school, anti-Russian slurs brought me on the verge of suicide at the end of seventh grade. Some days, I regret that I did not end my life. Maybe, if I did commit it, the hatred would stop. I dream of returning home to Russia, becoming an artist, getting married, having kids. But I want hatred to stop. I want to attend John Glenn High without being bullied each day. I want people to realize that some of us are very young.

Olesya don't try to persuade these racists. They will never like us not because of the policy of our president but just because we exist and occupy such a big territory reach with resources.
The other reason they hate us is because they can not conquer us. They fear us and all they can do is just bark from their countries at us(great britain prime minister r how u call it)
At least two guys tried already to conquer us. What did they get? Nothing. And when u can do nothing all that's left is hate and hate and hate...and do dirty propaganda of course.

By the way Maya M why dont u mention nice places turned into hell by usa?

"America is the only upholder of civilization" - really? =)U behave urself like american slave. All i see here is a miserable person spreading antirussian propaganda. So pathetic.

Maya M said...

Olesya,
I am sorry that bullies have been mean to you. Please do not ever consider resorting to suicide. If you do it, those who have hated you will not stop. They will just say that you have been mentally unstable. Why don't talk you with your parents about homeschooling? You are intelligent and I am sure you can do it. Maybe they do not understand how much you suffer at school.

Of course, I know about Russian scientists like your sister. My department has even tried to establish collaboration with some. Unfortunately, there are also cases such as a Ukrainian scientist casually known to me who became a refugee and moved to the USA because she didn't know then Russia would invade her city. Unfortunately, you don't seem to have a problem with this aggression. You could complain, "Bullies are blaming me for Putin's war crimes, for which I am totally innocent", but so far you just complain about how people treat you and do not utter a word of disapproval to the current Russian leadership. Of course, this is your business, maybe you like Putin. This is why I see little hope for Russia even when current young Russians grow up: many of them support Putin. If anything, the support for him grows because he is successful with killing non-Russians.

Anonymous, nice place turned into hell by USA? Really? Name one! I can name nice places turned into hell by Russia, such as Crimea, Eastern Ukraine and parts of Georgia. Syria was not a nice place to begin with, but Russia turned it into the 9th circle of hell.

I am not a slave to the USA, just a person whose country was greatly damaged by the Soviet Union and who now enjoys freedom thanks to the USA. I have some issues with the USA as well, but no American bully remotely similar to you has ever commented on my blog. Stereotypes grow around people like you, and then kids like Olesya suffer.

Let me repeat, however: We do not hate Russians. They know it, and this is why Eastern Bulgaria is full of Russian refugees. A friend of mine makes a living teaching them Bulgarian. My family has been on a sea vacation for 2 summers in a house owned by a Russian. He is not yet a refugee, but has bought a house abroad, just in case.

One final question, Anonymous: Would you advise Olesya to return to Russia? Sincerelly?

Olesya said...

I can say that the US was turned into hell by the US government. I lived here since I was 3. Before that, I lived in Sosnoviji Bor, a suburb of Saint Petersburg. I came back to visit Russia many times during the summers. I did not even speak English till I was 6 years old. In February 2017, some guy shot and killed 17 people, 14 of them kids at a high school in Florida. That was the 208th school shooting since Columbine in spring of 1999. And the government is only now trying to do something. But what will change when Trump accepted 30 million dollars to do nothing about gun laws. With the Florida shooting, they knew that he was going to do it and did nothing to prevent it. I understand what the victims' families went through because on the worst day of my life the 4th of December 2011, my dog was shot dead. It was more than 6 years ago but I would never want to go through that again. On the day my dog was killed, I was 9 years and 2 days old. Another thing I hear on the news all the time is the police shooting innocent black teens. Should they even kill the innocent? I seen many horrible things in the US but the worst is cutting Education for the sake of the military. As a result, many public schools have cut the fine arts out because of decreased funding. My school is only keeping the arts in school because the school makes 10 million dollars of a festival held in September each year. As for politicians, as long as the Arts are not cut and they don't support killers, I do not care.

Maya M said...

Gun violence is indeed a very serious problem in the USA. I know people who have left the country because of it. As for black victims of police, however, many who are not innocent are presented as such, e.g. Michael Brown.

The difference in foreign aid provided by us to war torn countries is what makes russia a joke....oh yea it can provide lots of military muscle for a price.

It is mid-March 2022, and the paranoid unhinged dictator Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine. Will Olesya or anyone else try to defend Russia and Russians again? In less than a century, Russians have allowed not one but two genocidal madmen wreak havoc on millions of innocent people.
