Chaly explained why the issue here isn't the plant itself.
Russia and the United States want to take over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant for themselves. Valeriy Chaly, Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States (2015-2019), stated this on the Suspilne television channel.
Regarding US President Donald Trump's assertion that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin supposedly wants the best for Ukraine, he dismissed it as nonsense.
Regarding the talk about electricity supplies "at very low prices," Chaly said:
"They're offering to take over our Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, a joint venture between Russia and the United States. And from our plant, the Russians will supply us, Ukraine, with electricity at reduced rates."
He emphasized that the issue here isn't the plant itself, but rather that Russia wants to keep us connected to the Russian grid.
"And not give us the opportunity, as we've been doing recently... to completely reconnect to Europe. They're demonstrating time and again that they have us on the hook and won't let us exercise our sovereign rights," the diplomat emphasized."
