Translating from an opinion by Alexey Getman's in UNIAN, May 23:
"In Hitler's Footsteps: What's Behind Putin's "Buffer Zone" Statements
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has started talking about creating a "buffer zone" (and not for the first time). But, while talking about the need to create it, he does not answer the question: where will it be created? Deep into the Russian Federation, or deep into Ukraine? How many kilometers should it extend?
For example, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, said that a "buffer zone" of 200 kilometers is needed. Taking into account that, most likely, the situation of deepening into Ukraine and such whims is being considered, then, by and large, the Kremlin dreams of a demilitarized zone all the way to Kyiv. And even Kyiv should be included in it. That is, all this is complete nonsense. This is an attempt, with the help of, among others, the Americans, to create "legitimate" occupied territories.
In simple terms, what Russia has failed to seize in recent years, Putin is trying to seize, calling it a "buffer zone."
Moreover, if we recall how Putin visited Kursk region a few days ago, and some governor there told him that Sumy should become part of the Russian Federation, then we can make some interesting observations. On the one hand, the Russians have revived the old topic of the need to create a demilitarized zone. And on the other, they are already planning to seize new territories of Ukraine, openly and publicly stating this...
In fact, the Russians are not going to stop, not even to suspend the so-called special military operation. They do not want and do not plan to agree to any ceasefire. After all, as US President Donald Trump recently said, the Russians now feel like winners.
Of course, I, like many of us, am surprised by the reaction of our friends from the United States. I cannot believe that they do not understand what is happening. And the question arises: why do they pretend not to understand, why do they play the fool? Here everything is obvious...
If you look at Hitler's rhetoric in 1939, 1940 and even 1941 - on the eve of and already during World War II - Putin is now repeating it almost word for word.
Especially, as far as the desire for peace is concerned. Hitler positioned himself as perhaps the greatest "peacemaker" in Europe: he constantly "strove" for peace, he "fought for peace" by all possible means. Putin is now following the same path.
That's why sometimes I even want to advise our friends from the USA: after listening to Putin, watch and listen to archival recordings of Hitler's speeches and compare the rhetoric. They will be very surprised...
Why did the Russian dictator pull the idea of creating a "buffer zone" out of his sleeve right now? There are no complex strategies here. He is under pressure and he understands that at any moment, the pressure could increase from the United States. The next step will obviously be some additional sanctions. To prevent this, Putin resorts to manipulation and lies. Like, I really, really want peace, but let's do it this way. Exactly this way. And then he suggests a method that cannot be implemented."
