From DonPress, Sept. 13:
"Why Putin needs Donbass
The Russians want to seize Donbas not for the sake of a phantom "Russian world" with a Russian-speaking population, but solely for control over its natural resources. This was stated by military and political analyst Dmitry Snegirev in an interview with Glavred.
"The fierce fighting in the Pokrovsk district was primarily related to Russian attempts to seize control of mineral deposits. The village of Shevchenko contains the largest lithium deposits in Europe, and Kotlino has the largest coking coal deposit in Europe. Without these resources, the Ukrainian metallurgy industry will face serious problems. If Russia occupies Pokrovsk, steel production in Ukraine could fall from 6.5 million to 2.5 million tons per year. This threatens social unrest, especially in the government-controlled territories of the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions," the expert explained.
The occupiers are now pushing into Slovyansk, he added.
"Because it contains some of the largest shale gas deposits. The reserves are so significant that if they are developed, there will be grounds for talking about Ukraine's energy independence. The Russians need to politically block potential gas production, because Ukrainian energy independence is essentially the end of Russia's influence in Ukraine," Snegirev explained."
