Kaja Kallas about Russian negotiating tactic

Kaja Kallas in an interview to RND, quoted by Unian and DonPress, Sept. 13:

"We have a situation reminiscent of 1938. Czechoslovakia asked for help against Nazi Germany, received no help, and fell into Nazi hands... Today... if Ukraine falls, the security of all of Europe will be at risk. We must demonstrate that we have learned the lesson of history...

This discussion about possible territorial concessions is a trap, and we must not fall into it. The Russians want us to discuss what Ukraine must give up for peace, while completely ignoring the fact that the Kremlin itself has not yet made any concessions.

The classic Russian negotiating tactic works in three stages: first, Moscow demands what it never had. Then, it resorts to ultimatums and threats. Ultimately, voices in the West mobilize, ready to offer the Kremlin precisely what it never had. Ultimately, the Kremlin is getting more than it could ever have dreamed of.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is currently laying claim to Ukrainian regions he doesn't even control. He is trying to promote the idea that the compromise is that he will retain only those Ukrainian territories he has already occupied. This isn't really a compromise if absolutely outrageous demands were made before. Our goal must be to ensure that this war is not beneficial to Putin. The reward for aggression will be more war, not less."
