Sikorski appeals for honesty about guarantees for Ukraine

Translating from the Obozrevatel, Sept. 14:

"Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski criticized the idea of "security guarantees" for Ukraine due to the lack of willingness to fight Russia. He proposed abandoning the term.

The Polish minister made this statement during his speech at the annual Yalta European Strategy meeting in Kyiv. He believed that Ukraine "already has guarantees, even if they are called 'assurances' in the Budapest Memorandum." However, if other, more specific guarantees are provided, Sikorski believes they will not work.

The diplomat recalled that the purpose of security guarantees for Ukraine is to deter Russia from further aggression: "It's like, if you attack someone who has been given guarantees, we will start a war in their defense."

"So, if we provide security guarantees to Ukraine, we're saying we can start a war against Russia. And I don't think that's convincing, that there's any credibility to it. Anyone who wants to fight Russia can do so right now. But I don't see anyone willing to do so. But in international relations, there's nothing worse than providing guarantees that aren't credible," Sikorski said.

The Polish Foreign Minister called for recognition that the discussion is not about guarantees for Ukraine, but about "monitoring peace and strengthening Ukraine."

He also stated that the focus should be on military aid to Ukraine instead of negotiating these security guarantees.

"I fear that this self-consuming debate is disrupting and demobilizing politicians from the more urgent task of finding funding for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027," Sikorski explained."
