Kasparov: Weak and corrupted Western leaders enabled Putin's aggression

Translating from the Dialog, Sep 27:

"Kasparov named those who "pushed" Putin into a full-scale invasion of Ukraine

Putin succeeded in influencing some Western leaders through blackmail and intimidation, which allowed him to strengthen Russia's and his own positions on the international stage, Garry Kasparov said. His low opinion of world leaders prompted the Kremlin leader to consider attacking Ukraine. He believed this crime should go unpunished. Kasparov spoke about this on the Free Russia Forum on YouTube.

"Schröder and Sarkozy illustrate how the West has caved in to Putin. Bought, intimidated, or bullied, leading Western countries are starting to give in, so there's nothing to comment on. Apparently, this isn't the only case. I think this is a long-running story, and most likely, Putin knew about it and treated Sarkozy like a doormat, while Sarkozy signed off on everything Putin gave him. These are the roots of the tragic situation we live in today," the Russian opposition leader confidently stated.

Garry Kasparov then added: "Putin's war in Ukraine wasn't really a one-time decision on Putin's part. The decision to cross the border, to launch a full-scale aggression, not to seize Crimea piecemeal, but to simply attack a neighboring country with the goal of eliminating it—that's the result of years of contacts with Western leaders, Putin's complete confidence that these are doormats that can be treated like that. He looked at them and understood everything about them. The last thing he needed to understand was at the meeting with Biden in Geneva at this summit, and I think Putin understood everything.""
