Oksana Katerusha, a 50-year-old nurse at the Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology, was killed in Kyiv during Russian shelling on the morning of September 28. She was in the department assisting a patient when a Shahed drone directly hit the building. They both died.
A patient fell ill in a shelter
Early in the morning of September 28, Russia launched its regular massive shelling of Ukraine. Kyiv and the surrounding region came under attack. In addition to the missiles, dozens of Shahed drones were flying toward the capital from various directions. One of them struck the main building of the Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology. The strike hit the department where 50-year-old nurse Oksana Katerusha was on duty. She died instantly. The explosion damaged rooms on the 5th through 3rd floors. Flames engulfed the wards. A patient in the department died along with the woman.
As eyewitnesses told OBOZ.UA, nurses and orderlies took all the sick patients down to the basement during the alarm. But one patient became seriously ill. It was impossible to render assistance to him in the basement, where so many people had gathered. An electrocardiogram was needed, etc.
Oksana saw that the Russian missiles had already flown past, and then the "Shahed" attack began. She decided to go upstairs to the ward. They went up together. While Oksana was rendering assistance, a "Shahed" hit their ward directly.
Oksana was a native of Vasylkiv in the Kyiv region. She had worked at the Institute of Cardiology for many years, joining immediately after graduating from medical school. Many patients knew her; she never refused to help anyone. They remember her as a very bright and compassionate person.
